ReHacked vol. 308: The Sony FX-300 Jackal: A Holy Grail technological marvel of the late 70s, It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds and more

“In the Asian context, identity and sense of self is less defined by being unique, but [more] about your roles and your relationship with others,” Wang says. <...>
Another explanation for the discrepancy seems to be how parents discuss past experiences with their children. In New Zealand Māori, first memories emerge earlier than in those of a European background, at about 2.5 years old. Prof Elaine Reese at the University of Otago, who studies autobiographical memory in children and adolescents, points to a strong emphasis on oral traditions in Māori culture but also elaborative conversations when reminiscing about past events.

It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds - Bert Hubert's writings #security
The very short version: it is madness to continue transferring the running of European societies and governments to American clouds. Not only is it a terrible idea given the kind of things the “King of America” keeps saying, the legal sophistry used to justify such transfers, like the nonsense letter the Dutch cabinet sent last week, has now been invalidated by Trump himself. And why are we doing this? Convenience. But it is very scary to make yourself 100% dependent on the goodwill of the American government merely because it is convenient. So let’s not.
Amazon Now Openly Discloses You’re Buying a License to View Kindle eBooks #copyrights
Amazon recently changed the wording on their website when it comes to buying Kindle ebooks.
As the screenshot above shows, they now have a disclaimer under the buy now button that says, “By placing your order, you’re purchasing a license to the content and you agree to the Kindle Store Terms of Use”.
It also says that same thing when shopping for Kindle ebooks directly from the store on Kindle ereaders and Kindle apps.
The funny thing is they only appear to be doing that in the US. I checked Amazon UK and Amazon CA and both show the old disclaimer that just says, “By clicking the above button, you agree to the Kindle Store Terms of Use”.

The $1.5B Bybit Hack: The Era of Operational Security Failures Has Arrived - The Trail of Bits Blog #blockchain #security
On February 21, 2025, cryptocurrency exchange Bybit suffered the largest cryptocurrency theft in history when attackers stole approximately $1.5B from their multisig cold storage wallet. At this time, it appears the attackers compromised multiple signers’ devices, manipulated what signers saw in their wallet interface, and collected the required signatures while the signers believed they were conducting routine transactions.

Birkenstock sandals are not art, says German court #copyrights #art
Birkenstocks may be cool enough for Barbie but the sandals do not qualify as works of art, a German court has ruled.
The company had claimed its footwear could be classified as art and so was protected by copyright laws in a case it put forward to stop rivals selling copycat versions of the cork-soled sandals.
But a judge dismissed the claim, saying the shoes were practical design items - a decision Birkenstock called a "missed opportunity for the protection of intellectual property".
Microsoft unveils Majorana 1, the world’s first quantum processor powered by topological qubits #technology #hardware #computing
For nearly a century, these quasiparticles existed only in textbooks. Now, we can create and control them on demand in our topoconductors. MZMs are the building blocks of our qubits, storing quantum information through ‘parity’—whether the wire contains an even or odd number of electrons. In conventional superconductors, electrons bind into Cooper pairs and move without resistance. Any unpaired electron can be detected because its presence requires extra energy. Our topoconductors are different: here, an unpaired electron is shared between a pair of MZMs, making it invisible to the environment. This unique property protects the quantum information.

UK’s Thames river has been a watery grave for over 6,000 years #history
The Thames skeletons have been analyzed by researchers since the 19th century. Swimming in theories, some say that many bodies pointed to an epic battle between the Celts and Romans or at least violent encounters between groups. “Violence is particularly common theme for later prehistoric human remains from watery places,” an expert told Live Science. Others propose that the bodies ended up in the Thames but originated from riverbank burials or drownings.
Another expert said that the latest research has “moved the arguments along,” but the funerary origins of these remains have yet to be completely studied and demonstrated.
"A calculator app? Anyone could make that." #longread
Not true. A calculator should show you the result of the mathematical expression you entered. That's much, much harder than it sounds.
