3 Maps Of Doggerland: Mapping The Lost World #history #nature

What Was Doggerland? A Prehistoric Landscape:

Doggerland was a rich, marshy landscape that served as a bridge between Britain and mainland Europe. It provided a haven for diverse wildlife and early human communities, who took advantage of its abundant natural resources for hunting, foraging, and eventually, settlement.

The hardest working font in Manhattan – Aresluna #design #longread

Many keyboards, especially older ones, sported a particular distinctive font on their keycaps. It was unusually square in proportions, and a weird mélange of “mechanical” and “childish.”

Hackers Expose Iridium Satellite Security Issues - IEEE Spectrum #security

In a recent demonstration, German white hat hackers showed how to intercept text messages sent via the U.S. satellite communication system Iridium and locate users with an accuracy of about 4 kilometers.

The twohackers, known publicly only under the nicknames Sec and Schneider, made the revelations during a presentation at the Chaos Communication Congress in late December in Hamburg, Germany. During the talk, they highlighted severe vulnerabilities in services that tens of thousands of users from the U.S. Department of Defense rely on.

DOGE as a National Cyberattack - Schneier on Security #security #politics

First, it was reported that people associated with the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had accessed the US Treasury computer system, giving them the ability to collect data on and potentially control the department’s roughly $5.45 trillion in annual federal payments.

Then, we learned that uncleared DOGE personnel had gained access to classified data from the US Agency for International Development, possibly copying it onto their own systems. Next, the Office of Personnel Management—which holds detailed personal data on millions of federal employees, including those with security clearances—was compromised. After that, Medicaid and Medicare records were compromised.

Teenagers turning to AI companions are redefining love as easy, unconditional and always there #society #psychology

Today, another transformation in the modern love story is unfolding, driven not by seductive authors or film directors, but in the advertisements and modifications offered by companion chat apps like Replika and Xioce.

As Shelly Palmer, a professor of advanced media and technology consultant, has argued, the human experience is about storytelling, and AI companions are a new type of storytelling tool. They are spinning a seductive tale of companions who agree with you endlessly and on demand. An AI partner is “always on your side,” promises an advertisement for Replika companions, “Always ready to listen and talk.”

Resist Authoritarianism by Refusing to Obey in Advance ‹ Literary Hub #society #politics

Do not obey in advance.

Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.

Record-breaking neutrino is most energetic ever detected #space #nature

Neutrinos are electrically neutral particles more than one million times lighter than an electron. They are typically produced in nuclear reactions such as those at the centre of the Sun, from which they emerge with energies on the order of millions of electronvolts (106 eV). But for more than 10 years, researchers have been recording neutrinos carrying unprecedented energies of up to several quadrillion electronvolts (1015 eV, or 1 petaelectronvolt), which are thought to originate in distant galaxies. (The most energetic particle ever detected, at 320,000 PeV, was not a neutrino but a cosmic ray dubbed the Oh-My-God particle.)

US and UK refuse to sign AI safety declaration at summit - Ars Technica #ai #security #privacy

US Vice President JD Vance has warned Europe not to adopt “overly precautionary” regulations on artificial intelligence as the US and the UK refused to join dozens of other countries in signing a declaration to ensure that the technology is “safe, secure and trustworthy.”

The two countries held back from signing the communique agreed by about 60 countries at the AI Action summit in Paris on Tuesday as Vance vowed that the US would remain the dominant force in the technology.

“The Trump administration will ensure that the most powerful AI systems are built in the US, with American-designed and manufactured chips,” Vance told an audience of world leaders and tech executives at the summit.

The Universe of Discourse : Surnames from nicknames nobody has any more #history #linguistics

English has a pattern of common patronymic names. For example, "John Peters" and "John Peterson" are someone whose father was named "Peter". ("Peters" should be understood as "Peter's".) Similarly we have John Williams and John Williamson, John Roberts and John Robertson, John Richards and John Richardson, John James and John Jameson, John Johns and John Johnson, and so on.

Often Dad's name was a nickname. For example, a common nickname for "John" is "Jack" and we have (less commonly) John Jacks and (more commonly) John Jackson. John Bills and John Bilson, John Wills and John Wilson, and John Willis and John Willison are Bill, Will, and Wille, all short for William.

"Richard" is "Dick", and we have John Dicks (or Dix) and John Dickson (or Dixon). "Nicholas" is "Nick" and we have John Nicks (or Nix) and John Nickson (or Nixon).
