A mysterious object is being dragged into the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way’s center | UCLA #nature

For two decades, scientists have observed an elongated object named X7 near the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way and wondered what it was. Was it pulled off a larger structure nearby? Was its unusual form the result of stellar winds or was it shaped by jets of particles from the black hole?

Now, having examined the evolution of X7 using 20 years of data gathered by the Galactic Center Orbit Inintiative, astronomers from the UCLA Galactic Center Group and the Keck Observatory propose that it could be a cloud of dust and gas that was ejected during the collision of two stars.

‘An economic fairytale’: Australia’s inflation being driven by company profits and not wages, analysis finds | Australian economy | The Guardian #economy

Company profits, not wages, have driven the soaring inflation in Australia, an analysis from the Australia Institute has found.

The thinktank has released evidence of what it calls a “profit price spiral”, arguing big business earnings account for 69% of the inflation that is above the reserve bank’s target range of 2-3%.

The Reserve Bank of Australia and its governor, Philip Lowe, have been warning of a “wage-price spiral”, when price rises cause wages to increase which in turn causes further price rises, which was an issue of the 1970s stagflation period.

The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web | Evening Standard #privacy #security #software

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the US is advising people to use ad blockers as part of a warning about the threat of scams online.

In a public service announcement, the security agency’s internet complaints department says ad-blocking extensions can help to protect users against fraudulent online adverts that appear in search results. Cybercriminals are behind such ads that are made to look like messages from real brands and businesses, it says.

The dupes, which can sometimes appear at the top of a search results page, contain links to fake websites or malicious software downloads that try to pinch your login details or financial information.

5th person confirmed to be cured of HIV - ABC News #health #science

Researchers are announcing that a 53-year-old man in Germany has been cured of HIV.

Referred to as "the Dusseldorf patient" to protect his privacy, researchers said he is the fifth confirmed case of an HIV cure. Although the details of his successful treatment were first announced at a conference in 2019, researchers could not confirm he had been officially cured at that time.

Today, researchers announced the Dusseldorf patient still has no detectable virus in his body, even after stopping his HIV medication four years ago.
