Jump in cancer diagnoses at 65 implies patients wait for Medicare, according to Stanford study #health #society

A couple of years ago, Joseph Shrager, MD, professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford School of Medicine, noticed a statistical anomaly in his practice. It seemed that patients were diagnosed with lung cancer at a surprisingly higher rate at 65 years old than, say, at 64 or 66.

“There was no reason rates should differ much between the ages of 63 and 65,” Shrager said. He talked it over with his thoracic surgeon colleagues at Stanford who said they were seeing something similar. They wondered if the jump in diagnoses might be a result of patients delaying care until they became Medicare eligible at 65.

Deliveroo April Fools' joke backfires in France #internet #economy

On 1 April thousands of customers of the delivery platform across France got confirmation emails for orders totalling over €450 (£380; $530).

Many took to social media to express anger at the stunt.

Late on Thursday Deliveroo informed its customers via Twitter and email that it had not been serious.

"We confirm that it was an April Fool's joke," the clarification read. "You can enjoy the evening by ordering the pizza of your choice."

But few customers were amused. One of them said he had "almost had a stroke" after receiving a €466 invoice for 38 pizzas that he had never ordered.

8 Examples of Tensegrity That Almost Defy Gravity #science #engineering

The term tensegrity was first used by legendary architect Buckminster Fuller during his experimentation with alternative structural systems. Fuller described works of tensegrity as “self-tensioning structures composed of rigid structures and cables, with forces of traction and compression, which form an integrated whole.” He also believed that works of tensegrity were more natural than works of solely compression, as similar systems are found in the biology of living creatures, such as the combination of biological material to allow motion.

GitHub investigating crypto-mining campaign abusing its server infrastructure #security #blockchain

Code-hosting service GitHub is actively investigating a series of attacks against its cloud infrastructure that allowed cybercriminals to implant and abuse the company’s servers for illicit crypto-mining operations, a spokesperson told The Record today.

The attacks have been going on since the fall of 2020 and have abused a GitHub feature called GitHub Actions, which allows users to automatically execute tasks and workflows once a certain event happens inside one of their GitHub repositories.

How Much Polish Is There in Yiddish (and How Much Yiddish Is There in Polish)? #culture

For centuries, Yiddish was the language of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Nowadays, it is rarely spoken, but it lives on in the texts of Yiddish literature – and the minds of Yiddish scholars who have strived to analyse its complex composition.

Egypt wants over $1 billion in compensation after a cargo ship blocked the Suez Canal for nearly a week, a top canal official has said.

Lt. Gen. Osama Rabei, head of the Suez Canal Authority on Thursday warned the ship and its cargo will not be allowed leave Egypt if the issue of damages goes to court.

He said in a phone interview with a pro-government TV talk show that the amount takes into account the salvage operation, costs of stalled traffic, and lost transit fees for the week that the Ever Given had blocked the Suez Canal.

“It’s the country’s right,” Rabei said, without specifying who would be responsible for paying the compensation. He added that in the past, canal authorities and the ship's owners have had a good relationship.
